Locals in Lapeer County spotted the kangaroo hopping along driveways and even through a cemetery on Tuesday.

Alex McCarty caught the moment she saw the animal, now known to be named Douglas, on her journey to work. “What is a kangaroo doing in Michigan?” she asked as it hopped through the cemetery in a video shared to her social media.

“Whose kangaroo is this? What do I do?” she asked.

It turns out that Douglas is a pet of an exotic animal owner and had managed to escape from his home.

Resident Sara Greer also spotted Douglas out the front of her own house, as reported by Fox 2.

“Just walking up and down the driveway, not walking, hopping up and down the driveway and it was eating something,” she said.

Lapeer County is far from the native home of a kangaroo, which is usually only found in Australia. Kangaroos can be kept as exotic pets in some states, however, if the owner has the necessary permits.

Greer called 911 over the animal sighting, and told them what she had seen. “I said I’m located in southern Lapeer County and there is a pause and she responds ‘Ma’m are you sure it’s a kangaroo?’ and I said yes I’m sure!”

The call was handed over to Lapeer County Animal Control and the kangaroo eventually made it home.

Greer told Fox 2 that she spoke to Douglas’ owner and discovered he has a license to own exotic pets and was able to entice the kangaroo shortly after he got out.

“The way the world is today, it puts a smile on your face,” said Greer.

Not all neighbors are always so happy to have an uninvited guest in the form of a kangaroo though. Last December, a man in Tennessee allegedly strangled his neighbor’s pet kangaroo to death after it attacked his wife.

The kangaroo had gotten out of its enclosure and into the garden, though still on the owner’s property. After being told to entice it back in the confined area with food, the wife was allegedly attacked by the kangaroo when she stepped into the garden.

Her husband reportedly intervened and strangled the kangaroo to death, leaving the neighbors telling local media that they were “just so upset” upon discovering the younger kangaroos surrounding the dead body.
