WARNING: This article contains spoilers for ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’
The new Marvel film sees the former couple reunite on the fields of battle as they team up to face villain Gorr the God Butcher.
Two Thors are certainly better than one, you’d think, but the quest is not without its consequences for them both.
‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Ending Explained: What Happened to Jane Foster?
Thor: Love and Thunder reveals that around six months before the events of the movie Jane discovers she has stage 4 cancer, and the disease is so advanced that no treatment is working.
Desperate to see if there’s another way for her to beat the illness Jane decides to visit New Asgard, where she feels the pull of Mjölnir.
The hammer, which was shattered by Hela (Cate Blanchett) in Thor: Ragnarok, deems Jane worthy and bestows its powers upon her, making her the Mighty Thor.
At first it appears that Jane has solved her issue but it soon becomes evident that the hammer is hindering her healing process rather than helping, because it drains her life energy every time she wields it.
When Thor learns of this he asks Jane to not use Mjölnir again and instead get the treatment that will help her battle her cancer, and she makes this promise to him before he goes to fight Gorr in one last epic battle.
Gorr’s plan is to reach Eternity, the cosmic being that is the embodiment of the seven cosmos, at the center of the universe. In doing so, he hopes to make one wish: To kill all gods for revenge following his daughter’s death.
Thor battles with Gorr when the villain is at the precipice of Eternity’s realm, and for a second it appears that the God of Thunder is about to die by Gorr’s hand. That is until Jane arrives in time to save the day.
In their battle, Jane is able to shatter Gorr’s Necrosword and she uses the power of her hammer to turn it to dust, but the act proves to use the last of her strength.
Despite the best efforts of the two Thors, Gorr is able to enter the realm of Eternity where they are also brought to watch as the villain approaches the celestial being.
Instead of stopping Gorr, Thor tells the villain that he will instead choose love and live his final moments with Jane, but when Gorr makes his wish he asks for Eternity to bring back his daughter (India Rose Hemsworth).
As this happens Thor holds Jane close to him and she shares her joy at being able to wield the power she did, before telling him what she finally chose to be her catchphrase.
In her final moments, Jane tells Thor that she loves him and he responds in kind before she breathes her last breath. The second post-credit scene confirms that Jane has died.
Meanwhle, as he dies, Gorr asks that Thor watch over his daughter, who now has the power of Eternity, and the God of Thunder agrees.
Thor: Love and Thunder is out in theaters now.
