So far, ABC has not revealed whether there will be The Rookie Season 3. However, fans of the comedy series should expect some news about the show’s future soon. The series was picked up for Season 2 on May 10, 2019, which means that the show may be due for a renewal soon. The previous renewal came just under a month after the Season 1 finale aired, which could mean that fans have to wait until June for news on the show.

ABC has started renewing shows for the 2020-21 television season. Big shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19 and The Good Doctor have already been giving additional seasons, but the network has not yet announced decisions for shows including The Rookie.

The Rookie is currently ABC’s 10th most-watched scripted show. Bless This Mess, which is ABC’s ninth most-watched show, has been renewed for another season. Shows performing worse than The Rookie in the ratings, like Mixed-ish, Single Parents and American Housewife, have not been recommissioned.

If ABC does decide to renew The Rookie for Season 3, we should it to premiere in fall 2020. Season 2 began at the end of September 2019, while Season 1 began in mid-October 2018. Obviously, whether The Rookie Season 3 airs in the fall will depend on the state of production in Los Angeles, which is currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Production is currently closed in the city, and it remains to be seen whether it will be able to open in June or July, when the show would have to start filming if it were to start airing in September.

Though ABC has not confirmed the show’s future, its creators have hinted at what could happen in Season 3. Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Showrunner Alexi Hawley told TVLine: “Obviously, the finale is going to have a major impact on everyone. Jackson’s [Titus Makin Jr.] friend was killed, and that’s a huge impact.

“Tim’s [Eric Winter] made a commitment to at least try and figure out what it’s going to be like with Rachel [Jasmine Mathews] in New York, and Lucy’s [Melissa O’Neil] at the beginning of her own relationship, but she’s probably still got some stuff she’s working out, even if it’s subconscious, about what happened to her with Caleb [Michael Cassidy] back only a few months prior. I don’t want to gloss over that.

“That being said, after Nolan figures out how to survive this, I want to still be able to have fun episodes, and do the comedy, the dumb criminals, that kind of stuff.”

The Rookie Season 2 is airing now on the ABC website and app.
