As with the majority of Netflix shows, episodes are expected to drop at 00:01 a.m. PDT. Netflix currently has the first eight episodes of The Politician available to stream, as well as the trailer for Season 2. The streamer also has the series’ lead cast member Ben Platt’s recent Live from Radio City Music Hall concert for fans of his two musical numbers from Season 1.

What will happen in The Politician Season 2?

The official Netflix synopsis reads: “Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) fights to unseat Dede Standish (Judith Light) in the New York State Senate race. As a long-time incumbent and greatly admired Senate Majority Leader with no-nonsense Chief of Staff, Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler) at her side, Dede’s re-election was supposed to be easy, but Payton - who sees this as the next step on his path to the Presidency - must decide what kind of politician he ultimately wants to be in order to succeed, even if that means exposing secrets, lies, and a throuple.

“Meanwhile, his mother, Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow), makes a momentous decision that threatens to upstage him and everything he’s hoping to accomplish. But if Payton wants to rise above petty politics and succeed without compromising his character, he must find his voice and strengthen his political message to inspire and excite the voters.”

As revealed by the trailer, the show has not forgotten how to do wild plot points. Among the things we see in that promo is Hadassah offering Payton’s rival Astrid a job, Payton getting two different women pregnant and Hadassah having a sexcapade with what she calls “spicy lube”.

Speaking with Variety, Platt jumping the show forward in time to the cast’s early 20s, “allows for a bit of a sharper, focused humor and a little more of a raunchiness that’s fun, and it’s all a little bit more streamlined.

“I think we have so much to set up in the first season, so much world to create and backstory to tell, and now we get to really focus on the specifics of this election. And it’s in New York, which we love.”

The Politician Season 2 is released on Friday, June 19 on Netflix.
