The trailer also gave fans a brief taste of what was to come for media mogul Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his children, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Connor (Alan Ruck).
Season three ended with Logan betraying his three children after they tried to usurp him at the helm of the fictional Waystar Royco company.
Logan’s health had been in question throughout the season, but the brief trailer released on Sunday showed a very robust and energetic Logan asserting his ambition.
“This is not the end,” Logan shouts.
“I am going to build something better, faster, leaner, wilder. I love it here. I f**ing love it here!”
Along with his three children, the trailer shows Shiv’s husband Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) standing behind Logan after betraying his wife in the previous season.
Another shot shows Cousin Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun) clapping enthusiastically during Logan’s speech.
He looks around at the others standing there and smiles widely during Logan’s promises.
Succession fans spent the next few hours tearing apart the brief appearance, analyzing everything from his smile to the color of his suit.
In the trailer, Greg is wearing a light gray suit, a stark difference from Tom’s dark navy suit.
Some fans speculated that it was a sign Greg was still scheming behind the scenes to move up in the company and may even be planning to replace Logan when he dies or steps down.
Gray suits often symbolize “puppet masters who pull the strings anonymously and without any accountability,” according to Language Humanities.
“Succession fandom convincing themselves Greg is going to commit several atrocities against humanity based on a 1-second clip of him smiling and clapping [while] wearing a light gray suit (dead wife color btw),” wrote Twitter user SpoopyMouse.
EmoGregHirsch added: “He’s never worn a suit that color, and choice of suiting in general but esp for Greg is very deliberate on succession.”
While Artagonist_HD speculated: “That Succession Trailer?? Cousin Greg will be on top I swear to God.”
Season three of the Emmy Award-winning drama saw Kendall, Shiv, and Roman try to block Logan’s attempts to buy GoJo from Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård).
But as they arrived at the Italian villa where the deal was being finalized, they came to learn they had been outsmarted by their father, who had been warned of their plans.
Logan told his children that their own mother Caroline (Harriet Walter) had given up her place as well as their places in the holding company as part of a re-negotiated divorce settlement with her ex-husband.
This gave him the power to go ahead with the deal with Mattson.
The final scenes of the third season showed Logan patting his son-in-law, Tom, on the shoulder, seemingly because he had told him of the trio’s plans.
Viewers also saw how the unscrupulous Tom got Greg on his side and how the latter promised to be his “attack dog” going forward.
It is unclear if the children will take on their father again, but show creator Jesse Armstrong let Newsweek in on some secrets ahead of the new season.
“We write and we do it here in London, so the American writers come over. I always have some ideas to go into with but they are really good people to talk about the nuances of a character and the world watching the show,” Armstrong explained.
“I guess sometimes you come in with one [idea] but mainly that is what the writing room is for, for putting different things we think are going to happen together and finding and not always finding those things which people find surprising [in the show].”
Succession is streaming on HBO Max now.
