Some Clinton staffers believe Hillary’s image difficulties stem from her persistent secretiveness-a source of friction and confusion for the president’s aides. They remain sore, for example, that she warned them of the press conference only at the last minute. Says one: “Hillary’s built a Berlin wall around her, and nothing is going to tear it down.” But others explain that she feels a fierce need to protect her private life. The recent lawsuit filed by Paula Jones, they say, has only added to the tension. Says one aide: “She’s gotten sadder. It’s as though everything is being peeled away. The only privacy she has left is with her daughter.”
