According to the alleged leaks, Resident Evil 8 is “years away,” with the game essentially being rebooted in 2019. While development on the sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was rumored to have begun as early as 2016, Capcom allegedly reallocated resources to RE7 DLC and the remake of Resident Evil 2, released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019.

While these leaks are unverified and should be considered a rumor, the streamer known as Dusk Golem previously leaked accurate information about the development of 2017’s RE7: Biohazard, pointing to the legitimacy of sources with claimed inside knowledge of Capcom and other horror-focused game studios.

According to Dusk Golem, “the ‘final’ RE8 version hasn’t even been in development for a full year yet.”

While the alleged leaks suggest Resident Evil 8 may still be years away, the rumors also speak to Capcom’s upcoming slate, beginning after release of Resident Evil 3. Rather than additional Resident Evil remakes, Dusk Golem says gamers should expect different remakes from the developer, using the same RE Engine, but featuring Capcom franchises beyond its flagship survival horror series.

In December, Capcom filed renewed trademark claims on the title Dino Crisis, prompting rumors the 1999-2003 trilogy of survival horror games—featuring dinosaurs instead of zombies—would soon see a new entry or reboot. The newly alleged leaks provide additional credence to this possibility.

There is also, according to Dusk Golem, “another Resident Evil game,” though no additional details are offered for the title, which is purportedly neither a remake of a previous entry or a new, numbered entry in the main series.

Newsweek has reached out to a PR company that works closely with Capcom in the United States in pursuit of confirmation and comment, but did not hear back in time for publication.

While the far future of the Resident Evil series is, for now, reliant on rumors and leaks, the upcoming release of the Resident Evil 3 remake should keep horror fans busy in the meantime. The RE3 remake’s producer Peter Fabiano previously shared new insights on the game, including its improved AI over the Resident Evil 2 remake and the included multiplayer mode, Resident Evil Resistance.

You can check out the trailer for the remake above. Resident Evil 3 will be released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on April 3, 2020.
