Season 7 picks up after a nearly 11-year hiatus and it seems as if our Police Officers haven’t skipped a beat. How will this hiatus come into play as the show develops, releasing new chapters every weekday? The first three episodes debut on May 4, with a new episode premiering each day until May 15.

Newsweek spoke with the show’s creators and stars Robert Ben Garant (“Deputy Travis Junior”), Thomas Lennon (“Lieutenant Jim Dangle”) and Cedric Yarbrough (“Deputy S. Jones”) to discuss why now is the right time for the return of Reno 911! and why Quibii is the right platform for it.

In the past years, there have been more than a few opportunities for a Reno 911! come back. When Comedy Central wanted the show back in 2009, the majority of the cast just felt that it was too soon. “Everybody’s careers had really sort of taken off without the show and it felt like a lateral move,” says one of the show’s creators Robert Ben Garant. “It felt weird to go back to the same network, to Comedy Central.” Garant adds, “It didn’t feel like a triumphant return.”

This is where Quibi comes in with its weird, new platform. “There was just something about it being in a new place, a new format, that we said, ‘Sure,’” says Garant. Another of the show’s creators, Thomas Lennon felt it was interesting that Quibi was sort of pitching to them, that they could do movies or other interesting things. “We’re like, well, that all sounds well and good, but the one thing we knew when we heard about the Quibi format is it’s the ideal Reno 911! format,” notes Lennon. “We are the Lay’s potato chips of programming,” Lennon jokes. “Just have a couple and then yeah, you’ll feel a little sick.”

“We’re a sketch show,” says Garant. “It was a perfect place for us when they pitched us ‘short things.’” In Lennon’s opinion, he feels these episodes are better because of their short length. “They never overstay their welcome,” Lennon says. “They’re just like, get in, hit hard and get out!”

Show actor Cedric Yarbrough comments on Reno 911! being his first big break and how good it feels to return back to a format such as this one. “Let’s face it, the show is an adult cartoon, it’s like Bugs Bunny,” says Yarbrough. “You don’t you want to have a half hour of Bugs Bunny.”

Although it has been over 10 years since the cast last donned their trusty khaki uniforms, most of them fell right back into the rolls. A few have actually performed as the characters over the years at various USO shows and local events for law enforcement but it has been a while since the whole cast has been back together. “It was really a weirdness when we were all there together for the first time, but it felt pretty amazing,” Lennon says. “The fun thing is everybody got really good at Reno 911!, then we took 11 years off where everybody got really good at their own shows.” Lennon adds, “By the time people came back, it had an Avengers kind of vibe.”

Robert Ben Garant had some nerves leading up to shooting that the team may need more time to warm up together. “I was really worried that it would take us a week to warm up,” Says Garant. “It used to take us two or three days and we would always start with material that we didn’t necessarily need.” Normally, they would shoot 10 or more of the same scene with hopes that one would be usable. But as soon as Wendy McClendon and Kerrie Kenney-Silver opened their mouths in their first shoot, he was no longer nervous at all. “They just hit the ground running so hard,” comments Garant. “I was super, super nervous and then as soon as we started, I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be so easy,’ and it was so easy.”

“I’ll say it was a little emotional for me just because I gained 20 to 30 lbs,” jokes Yarbrough. “I’ve enjoyed myself these last 11 years.”

Cedric was a little more concerned if they could capture that magic in a bottle again. “We’re like these weird Superfriends coming together and bringing our weird powers,” Yarbrough comments. “We’ve all had really great life experiences and now we’re bringing them all to this show that we loved.” He’s very thankful that they all still enjoy hanging out with each other and that they can still crack each other up.

“I compare us to the Avengers of improv, and Cedric refers to us as the Superfriends,” comments Lennon. “The Superfriends are much closer, yeah we’re the way dumber version.”
