AMC viewers also got an unexpected happy ending for Jesse Custer (played by Dominic Cooper) and Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga).
In the Preacher season and series finale, the following characters died:
Archangel/Archangel’s Beloved
The Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish) took a typically large number of heads across the “End of the World,” the first two of which were the star-crossed lovers the Archangel (David Field) and his Beloved (Sue-Ellen Shook). Both were shot down protecting Genesis, their angel/demon hybrid lovechild.
The Saint of Killers
After killing Genesis’ parents, The Saint was poised to kill Jesse when the eponymous Preacher persuaded him not to. Instead, The Saint allowed Jesse to kill him, with viewers not told why until later in the episode.
God
In killing The Saint, and allowing him to make a deathbed confession, he was able to save himself from Hell and take the biggest of all scalps as he shot God (Mark Harelik) and took his throne, turning down “an eternity of love” in return for taking his place on God’s throne.
Lara Featherstone
The Saint was not the only person with a body count in the Preacher finale, however. The episode brought the Lara (Julie Ann Emery) and Klaus Starr (Pip Torrens) infatuation to a head by having him kill her. The closer she got to Klaus during her time as a Grail operative, the more she realised that he was an irredeemable psychopath—a realization that led to her death as Klaus shot her for refusing to escape the apocalypse with him to live “under the sea.” Following a failed suicide attempt, she turned a gun on him, though after a struggle it was she who lost her life.
Humperdoo
Though the Preacher finale promised the “End of the World”, this was ultimately averted by Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), who was forced to kill Humperdoo (Tyson Ritter) despite loving him. Initially, he and Tulip brutally fought about what to do with Jesus’ (also Tyson Ritter) son, but she eventually persuaded him that killing Humperdoo was the only way to save the world.
Adolf Hitler
As Jesse fought with The Saint and Tulip and Cassidy battled it out, a third epic fight was taking place between Jesus and Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor), with the King of Kings eventually throttling the Nazi leader to death.
Jesse Custer/Tulip O’Hare
Like this year’s Veep series finale did before it, Preacher ended with a time jump to its main character’s funeral, where it was revealed that Tulip had also died the previous year after four decades of happy life together. They had left a child (also played by Ruth Negga), who met Cassidy at the funeral.
Cassidy
The vampire was the last of the Preacher characters to die in the AMC series finale as he decided it was time to go “someplace new.” He walked off into the sunlight with his umbrella down, ready to burn up and be reunited with his former friends.
The Preacher finale is streaming now on AMC.
