It’s an important decision for your first runthrough of a Pokémon game, and, in Sword and Shield, there are three very good choices. The Pokémon Company and GameFreak purposely left information about Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble a secret to let players discover as they go along.

But many trainers want to know everything there is to know about the Starters, including their evolutions, before making their choice. That’s where this guide comes in. If you’re on the fence as to which of the three Galar region Starter Pokémon to choose, here’s everything you need to know about them.

POKEMON SWORD AND SHIELD STARTER POKEMON EVOLUTIONS AND MORE

Grookey

Grookey is the Grass-type Starter, and while, its upbeat tempo is great for those looking for a good time, it’s a bit surprising to see what this grass monkey becomes. A common thread you’ll see in all three Starter Pokémon lines is its final typings and the various movepools they have and Grookey is no exception. [what does this last sentence mean?]

Thwackey is Grookey’s evolution, (evolves at Level 16) and it retains its pure Grass typing. It also learns Double Hit upon evolving.

Rillaboom is the evolution of Thwackey, (evolves at Level 35) and it gains access to a variety of sound-based attacks. Its signature move, Drum Beating, is a physical Grass-type attack with an 80 base attack that also lowers a Pokémon’s speed.

It gains access to moves like Boomburst that give trainers the option of making Rillaboom a mixed attacker, although Grookey’s final evolution does have a higher base attack than its special attack (125 to 60, respectively).

Scorbunny

The energetic fire rabbit, Scorbunny has a soccer player aesthetic, and its evolutions reflect that.

Raboot is the evolution of Scorbunny ,(evolving at Level 16) keeps its pure Fire typing and stays that way as it goes to its final evolution, Cinderace, at Level 35.

Upon evolving, Cinderace learns the signature move Pyro Ball. This Fire-type attack is a physical move with 120 base power with 90 percent accuracy. You can only use this move five times, but it also has a chance to leave the opponent with a burn.

Cinderace, as you can imagine, as high base attack and speed stats (116 and 119, respectively). It also has access to a variety of different types of moves from Fighting-type to Dark-type attacks.

Sobble

Finally, the Water-type Starter Sobble’s demeanor changes as it evolves.

Sobble evolves into Drizzile at Level 16 and retains its pure Water typing. It evolves into Intelleon at Level 35 and stays a pure Water-type. Upon evolving, Inteleon learns the new move, Snipe Shot.

Snipe Shot is an 80 base power special Water-type attack that ignores opponents’ moves or abilities that draw in moves. This is perfect for getting around abilities like Storm Drain.

Inteleon is the special attacker of the three, having a high base special attack and speed (125 and 120, respectively).

Pokémon Sword and Shield is available now for Nintendo Switch.
