The news of the On My Block spin-off was officially announced via Netflix’s Twitter account ahead of the Season 4 premiere on Monday, October 4.
The post read: “We won’t be leaving this incredible universe just yet. Thrilled to announce the stories will continue in Freeridge, an On My Block spin-off!”
The spin-off titled Freeridge, takes its name from On My Block’s fictional neighborhood in Los Angeles.
Freeridge will introduce a whole range of new characters to the On My Block universe. There will be a fresh group of friends “who may or may not have unleashed a deadly curse”, Variety reports. The spin-off will also be more female-focused.
At the moment, there are very few details about the cast, characters, and the plot of Freeridge, but the spin-off is unlikely to feature the original cast members after Monse, Ruby, Jamal, Cesar, and Jasmine reached the end of high school and went their separate ways.
The show’s original co-creators Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft will return for the spin-off alongside co-producer Jamie Uyeshiro and co-executive producer Jamie Dooner.
lungerich will not serve as showrunner on the spin-off and instead, Uyeshiro, Gonzalez, and Haft will take on the role.
In a statement, On My Block creator Lauren Iungerich said: “Co-creating and running On My Block was and will always be a highlight of my life,”
“I am so proud to pass the baton to my incredible partners Eddie and Jeremy and the incomparable Jamie Uyeshiro who rocked it in the writer’s room from day one,”
“There are more stories to tell of our beloved Freeridge and I cannot wait to continue to work with this talented team.”
Uyeshiro, Gonzalez, and Haft said in a joint statement: “Some of the greatest comments we’ve heard about On My Block were from fans telling us that they felt seen and represented,”
“As we embark on Freeridge, a more female-driven show, we will continue to invest in authentic characters that represent our passionate audience.”
They joked: “Oh, and there may be gnomies.” referring to Jamal’s obsession with garden gnomes.
Fans will be waiting a while for Freeridge to premiere, considering the show has not yet entered production.
Thankfully, all four seasons of On My Block are available to re-watch at your leisure via Netflix in the meantime.
