Maitreyi Ramakrishnan stars in the show as Devi Vishwakumar, an Indian-American high school student juggling school, friends, and everything else that adolescence has to throw at her, all while grieving the death of her father.
It was announced earlier in 2022 that Never Have I Ever has already been renewed for a fourth and final season, meaning fans that have already finished Season 3 (released on August 12) can look forward to seeing the characters’ stories continuing for one more installment.
While most cast members are expected to be back for Season 4, the finale of Season 3 has left some questions over character Paxton Hall-Yoshida. Meanwhile, Devi was seen going back and forth over a major life decision as the season came to a close.
So what exactly was going on with Devi at the end of the final episode? And will Paxton be back for Season 4?
Newsweek has everything you need to know about the ending of Never Have I Ever Season 3.
The following story contains major spoilers for Never Have I Ever Season 3.
What Happened at the End of Never Have I Ever Season 3?
In the last episode of Never Have I Ever, Devi was seen deciding whether or not to attend a different school for the last year of high school.
She was offered a spot at a fancy boarding school in Colorado, called Shrubland, which her school’s headteacher told her is an intensive one-year program for academically gifted seniors.
Initially, Devi did not want to attend, telling her friends she wanted to experience the last year of high school with them. She was also worried that attending the other school would increase her chances of starting college as a virgin. Her mom Nalini agreed that she shouldn’t go, saying she wasn’t ready to let her go yet, but after a conversation with Devi’s cousin Kamala, Nalini and Devi traveled to go and visit Shrubland.
Devi enjoyed her visit so much she decided she was going to attend after all. After the high school graduation, during which the students in the year above Devi graduated, Devi said goodbye to Ben Gross, her friend who she was formerly in a romantic entanglement with, and Paxton, who she also used to date.
Whilst heading back home, Devi suddenly had a huge change of heart about leaving and, in a touching scene, told her mom that she was not ready to leave her yet. Nalini tried to convince her to go but eventually agreed when Devi told her she needs more time with her.
At the end of the episode, Devi headed over to Ben’s house and cashed in her “one free boink” voucher that he had jokingly gave her earlier when she was worried about being a virgin. This sets up Season 4 to follow Devi and her friends’ through their last year of high school, and potentially a rekindled fling for Devi and Ben?
Has Paxton Hall-Yoshida Left Never Have I Ever?
At the end of Season 3, Paxton was delighted to have been offered a spot at Arizona State University and decided to move there following his graduation from high school. His best friend Trent was left devastated by his decision to move but eventually came round to the idea.
After making a short but sweet graduation speech, in which he praised Devi for helping him to study, Paxton and Devi said goodbye to each other in the hallway. The narration revealed that Devi did not feel any butterflies around Paxton anymore, suggesting this was finally the end of their relationship.
The duo had already split in a previous episode but, prior to their goodbye scene, there were hints that things could have been rekindled.
With fans getting closure on Paxton and Devi’s romance, plus the fact that he is moving to Arizona, fans may be curious over whether this means Paxton is no longer on the show.
He certainly won’t be showing up in any scenes at school next season but his best friend Trent will still be there so he could pop up if the character returns home to visit.
Newsweek has contacted Netflix for confirmation on whether or not Paxton will be back.
Meanwhile Trent, who was due to graduate with Paxton, revealed to girlfriend Eleanor in the Season 3 finale that he had failed his final year and would have to stay at school to repeat it. He was scared that Eleanor would be disappointed in him but, on the contrary, she was ecstatic that they would now be getting a whole other year at school together. Fans will no doubt also be glad that Trent, played by Benjamin Norris, is sticking around.
All three seasons of Never Have I Ever are now available to stream on Netflix.
