The film, which is the fifth in the Despicable Me franchise, follows a 12-year-old Gru (Steve Carell) as he tries to become worthy of joining the supervillain group the Vicious 6—but is then forced to go on the run with the help of his Minion friends (voiced by Pierre Coffin).

Minions: The Rise of Gru Digital Release With Bonus Content Confirmed
The collector’s edition of Minions: The Rise of Gru will have over 60 minutes of bonus content for viewers to enjoy.
The digital download for the collector’s edition will be released this Tuesday, August 30, while the 4K Ultra, Blu-ray and DVD release will come out a week later, on September 6.
Minions: The Rise of Gru’s collector’s edition will feature two mini-movies made exclusively for it. Both are set within the same era as the film, with one called Post Modern Minions and the other titled Minions and Monsters.
The bonus content will also include extended scenes, outtakes and other featurettes, including one where Gru co-director Brad Ableson teaches viewers how to draw and animate Minions.
Carell will also appear in one of the featurettes to detail how the film went from concept art to finished product. There is even one featurette titled Lair Flair: Make Your Own Minion Hideout.
Minions: The Rise of Gru is already available to buy and rent on its own digitally in the U.S. Viewers can either rent it for $19.99 or buy it for $29.99.
The film will become available on the streaming platform Peacock as the animation is being distributed by Universal Pictures. A streaming release date has not yet been confirmed by the film studio.
For viewers who are keen to watch the bonus content, they will need to get the film’s digital and home video release, as these featurettes, mini-films, and other content appear to be exclusive to the collector’s edition.
Since its release, Minions: The Rise of Gru has performed incredibly well at the box office, earning over $830 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. Reportedly, the film has generated over $351 million domestically as of August 23.
Minions: The Rise of Gru is out in theaters and available to buy or rent digitally now, the collector’s edition will be released digitally on Tuesday, August 30. It will come out on 4K Ultra, Blu-ray and DVD on September 6.
