What happened in The Man in the High Castle Season 3?
Throughout the season, the Nazis were trying to perfect their Die Nebenwalt device, which in theory allowed them to cross into parallel dimensions, with the plan being for them to use it to take over other parallel realities. However, many people who tried to use it ended up dying.
As part of keeping this project a secret, Joe Blake was sent out as an assassin, killing defectors in order to recover documents about the machine. This came after he was arrested at the end of Season 2 and forced into a re-education program that ended with him having to kill his father.
However, he himself was killed by Juliana, who slashed his throat and returned the files to Tagomi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa). Juliana also started to hatch a plan to destroy the machine by smuggling herself into the GNR. She manages to get pretty close to the machine before getting captured and sent to the same prison that Hawthorne Abendsen/The Man in the High Castle (Stephen Root) himself is in after he was captured earlier in the season.
Through Hawthorne, John Smith learns that only humans who do not already exist or are dead in the parallel reality they want to cross over into can successfully make the trip. Season 3 started to imply that Smith himself could join the resistance in the final season after he witnessed the Nazis blowing up the Statue of Liberty as part of their mission to erase all pre-Nazi American history.
He also started to blame the Nazis for the death of his son Thomas (Quinn Lord), who was so loyal to the party that he volunteered to be euthanized after discovering he had a degenerative disease.
The Man in the High Castle Season 3 also saw Frank’s death courtesy of a ritual decapitation. Juliana came across Frank, who was severely burned in an explosion last season, in the Neutral Zone with Liam/Wyatt Price (Jason O’Neill) on her way to be smuggled into the GNR. He was living in a group of Jewish people pretending to be Catholics and had become a pacifist making anti-fascist art.
This art is posted up across the neutral zone by Frank with Ed (DJ Qualls) until Frank is captured by Chief Inspector Kido (Joel de la Fuente) who beheads him as revenge for causing the explosion.
However, this spurs Ed on to start spreading Frank’s anti-fascist art in San Francisco. This, combined with Liam managing to shoot Himmler (Kenneth Tigar) puts the Resistance at perhaps its strongest position yet in the series, though fans will have to tune into Season 4 to find out if Juliana can return from a parallel dimension in time to help them.
