Disney releases, however, all tend to follow the same release schedule, so we have some idea when the Angelina Jolie movie will be available to subscribers.
When will Maleficent 2 Be Released On Disney+?
Generally speaking, Disney movies have up to a 90-day cinema release, followed by a physical media release (that is, DVD and BluRay) a few weeks later. Then, four months after that physical media release, movies are made available to stream on Disney+.
As such, we might expect Mistress of Evil to arrive on Disney+ in May 2020, alongside already confirmed titles George of the Jungle, John Carter and Homeward Bound I and II.
However, there are some signs that Disney is hoping to move movies from cinemas onto home video quicker, which would also mean they appear on Disney+ and other streaming services earlier.
Per What’s On Disney Plus, Bob Iger said of Disney’s plans: “The home video window continues to be quite important to us. You’ll likely see us protect that as well, although there’s going to be discussion around whether there’s an opportunity to move product into that window maybe a little sooner.”
These conversations may already be taking place—after all, there is usually at least a 90-day gap between cinemas and home releases, whereas Maleficent 2 comes to DVD 88 days after its cinema release in the U.S. (other territories, meanwhile, are getting a DVD release in February, following the more usual routine schedule).
This, however, will mean that Maleficent 2 comes to Disney+ before the original film does. Per CNET, the original Maleficent is not coming to Disney+ until October 1, 2020—the same day that the 2017 Beauty and the Beast is coming to the service as well as the cinematic classic Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
However, this would not be the only case where Disney has a film’s sequel but not the original. In the U.S., for example, Avengers: Infinity War is not streaming on Disney+ (though it is available in Canada and Australia among other territories) though Endgame is available to stream now.
